Dictionary of Environmental Health
A cultivated plant that has been produced through a selective breeding programme and therefore did not arise in nature by the processes of evolution or NATURAL SELECTION.
Cultivars are produced to emphasise a particular characteristic or trait in the PHENOTYPE but the process can result in plants that are less well adapted to survive or compete in other ways with wild plants. Consequently many cultivars can only thrive (or survive) through the continuing husbandry of humans.
