On the opposite side; contrasted to IPSILATERAL, meaning on the same side.

These are terms defined in relation to a stimulus or event. For instance, if a LESION was made in only one HEMISPHERE of the brain, that side (whether right or left) would be defined as the ipsilateral side (of the brain and body) while the other (non-lesioned) side would be contralateral to the lesion.
