compound

(i) Chemistry: A substance made of two or more elements (see PERIODIC TABLE OF THE ELEMENTS) joined together; a substance produced by the union of two or more separate components.

For example, sodium and chloride are elements; sodium chloride—common salt—is a compound.

(ii) Linguistics: A unit formed of other separate instances of the same unit; for instance, a word formed from two other words, such as ‘mailbox’.
