Christian Democratic Appeal
Christian Democratic Appeal, or Christen Democratisch Appèl (CDA), is the centre-right party which has dominated politics in the Netherlands. Founded in 1980 through a fusion of three confessional parties, the CDA or its constituent parties took part in all governments in 1917–94. Following significant electoral losses in 1994 the CDA was excluded from government for the first time in its history. It re-emerged as the largest party in the Tweede Kamer in the elections of 15 May 2002. It returned to government forming a coalition with List Pim Fortuyn and the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy. In the most recent elections to the Tweede Kamer, held on 22 January 2003, the party won 44 of the 150 parliamentary seats, thus gaining the status of largest party. It formed a coalition government with the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy and Democrats 66 under CDA Prime Minister Jan Balkenende.
