Dictionary of Biological Psychology

choline acetyltransferase

(ChAT, CAT) Cho line acetyltransferase is the critical synthetic enzyme involved in the production of ACETYLCHOLINE, catalysing the reaction of ACETYL COENZYME A and CHOLINE.

Neurons that contain ChAT are by definition CHOLINERGIC. There are antibodies to ChAT available, allowing IMMUNOHISTOCHEMISTRY to be performed for the determination of cholinergic neuron location. The introduction of this technique was critical in determining the details of cholinergic neuroanatomy in the CNS.
