(Cl) Chlorides are chlorine compounds and are essential for normal neural functioning (see for example ACTION POTENTIAL; CHLORIDE CHANNEL). Chlorine is important in ELECTROLYTE balance in the NERVOUS SYSTEM and elsewhere in the body—it accounts for two-thirds of all negatively charged ions in the BLOOD for example.
