Dictionary of Biological Psychology
(CSF) The fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Cerebrospinal fluid is produced by cells of the CHOROID PLEXUS which secrete it into the cerebral VENTRICLES. CSF circulatcs through the ventricles and then into the subarachnoid space surrounding the brain.
It drains into the blood-stream via the arachnoid villi. Its buoyant effect protects the CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM from damage due to acceleration and deceleration. Excess production or impaired removal of CSF can lead to HYDROCEPHALUS. Metabolic products enter the CSF from the brain. CSF can be analysed for the presence of proteins or cells (for example, lymphocytes and monocytes) that are indicative of various disease states, such as MENINGITIS.
