A CATALYST is a chemical that is able to exert an effect on physiological processes without itself being changed; catalysis is the process of doing this; to catalyse is to engage in catalysis. An ENZYME can be a catalyst of chemical reactions; for example GLUTAMIC ACID DECARBOXYLASE catalyses the conversion of glutamate to GABA.
