Dictionary of Biological Psychology

cable transmission

Term used to describe the transmission of electrical impulses along an unmyelinated AXON.

Transmission along myelinated fibres (see MYELIN) is described as SALTATORYACTION POTENTIALS ‘jump’ from one NODE OF RANVIER to the next, a very fast form of transmission. In unmyelinated axons, the electrical signal passively diffuses along the axon in a manner analogous to the passage of electricity along a cable. Signals become weaker with increasing distance, though the degree to which this happens will depend on the characteristics of the axon; see ACTION POTENTIAL.
