A Popular Dictionary of Judaism

BURIAL

In Biblical times, the dead were buried in family graves and were said to ‘sleep with their fathers’. Traditionally the dead are not buried on the *Sabbath or *Yom Kippur. Men are wrapped in their *tallis although coffins came into use in the Middle Ages.

The corpse is escorted to the grave and the *Kaddish prayer is recited. Graves are marked with the headstones although the *Sephardim lay their gravestones flat while *Ashkenazim set them upright. (See *FUNERAL CUSTOMS).
