Dictionary of Biological Psychology

brainstem

(also brain stem) The posterior part of the brain that consists of the MEDULLA, PONS and MIDBRAIN. It is continuous with the SPINAL CORD caudally, and with the DIENCEPHALON rostrally.

The brainstem contains numerous sensory and motor pathways which ascend or descend to interconnect the spinal cord and FOREBRAIN. Most sensory and motor pathways are relayed within the brainstem. Brainstem nuclei are involved in life-supporting or homeostatic (see HOMEOSTASIS) functions of the organism such as respiration (see BREATHING, NEURAL CONTROL OF), cardiovascular regulation and control of SLEEP and AROUSAL, as well as in basic sensory and motor functions.
