A biped is an animal that has only two feet on the ground in order to engage in LOCOMOTION; a QUADRUPED has four feet on the ground. Having the upper limbs free for other tasks confers on to the bipedal animal some considerable advantage in such things as, for example, grasping and the development of tool use.
