Dictionary of Biological Psychology
The term biogenic refers to something that is only derived from living things; an AMINE is a derivative of ammonia in which hydrocarbon radicals have replaced one or more of the hydrogen atoms ammonia possesses.
A biogenic amine is therefore simply an amine derived from living things. In practice the term biogenic amine refers to the MONOAMINE neurotransmitters: the CATECHOLAMINES and the INDOLEAMINES.
