BIMAH

(Hebrew ‘Elevated place’). The platform in the synagogue from which the *Torah *Scroll is read.

Traditionally it is placed in the centre of the building, but it is generally situated directly in front of the *Ark in *Progressive congregations. As well as readings, the *shofar is blown and sermons are preached from the bimah. The bimah is also known as the ‘almemar’ and, among the *Sephardim, as the ‘tebah’. (See *SYNAGOGUE).
