Initially, a personification, current in Asia Minor, of female fecundity According to Orphic (Greek) tradition she is an old woman, who makes the grieving → Demeter laugh by showing her her pudenda.

The obscene gesture is to be understood as a protective charm against the powers of death. As a demon, Baubo was visualized as headless or with her head placed between her legs. The name has been variously interpreted as meaning ‘belly’, ‘hole’, ‘womb’.
