Barroso, José Manuel Durão
José Manuel Durão Barroso is President of the European Commission for the term 2004–08. Barroso struggled in November 2004 to obtain approval from the European Parliament for his proposed cabinet of commissioners. After initially defending the controversial Italian nominee, Rocco Buttiglione, Barroso later accepted the Italian’s resignation and proposed a new team of commissioners.
Prior to being nominated for the post of Commission President Barroso was Prime Minister of Portugal for the centre-right Social Democratic Party (SDP). A member of the SDP since 1980, Barroso was first elected as a member of parliament in 1985 and was elected a further six times. In the Assembléia da República he served as chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in 1995–96. Barroso served as State Secretary and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Prime Minister in 2002–04.
Born on 23 March 1956 in Lisbon, Barroso studied law at the University of Lisbon and European studies and political science at the University of Geneva. He was visiting professor at Georgetown University, Washington, DC, in 1996–98 and head of the International Relations Department, Lusíada University, in 1995–99. José Manuel Durão Barroso is married to Margarida Sousa Uva and has three children.
