BAR KOKHBA, SIMEON

(d. 135 CE) Jewish rebel against the Roman Empire. The name Bar Kokhba means ‘Son of a Star’ and was believed to fulfil the prophecy ‘A star shall come forth from *Jacob’ (*Numbers 24:17). The Bar Kokhba revolt lasted from 132–135 CE and was supported by R.

*Akiva, the most eminent authority of the time. Bar Kokhba succeeded in capturing *Jerusalem and establishing an administration, but was killed by the Romans at the siege of Bethar.
