Dictionary of Biological Psychology

balance

The sense of balance is unusual in that there is little or no conscious awareness involved in the detection of imbalance or the correction of it.

It is however a critical sense: unless the body is properly balanced, movement cannot occur. The lack of awareness can be considered a mark of the importance of this sense, and of the speed with which it is adjusted. Balance is a principal function of the VESTIBULAR SYSTEM.
