(‘invincible’; modern Oudh) the ancient capital of the kingdom from whose royal family came prince Rāma, the hero of the epic and the seventh incarnation of .

It is one of the seven sacred cities of Hinduism and is located on the banks of the river Gogrā (ancient Śarayū) four miles from Fyzābād, Uttar Pradesh. It has a fortress-like temple of Hanumān and had a temple to Rāma which was converted into a mosque by Bābar, the first Mughal ruler of India.
