International Dictionary of Adult and Continuing Education
The process of placing a value upon, deciding the degree of excellence of, adjudging standard(s) of, or deciding the correctness of an artefact, piece of academic work, performance, or procedure.
The process is largely subjective although the degree of subjectivity depends upon the condition of knowledge underlying the work, procedure, or performance, etc. For instance, the level of correctness of simple mathematical knowledge may be assessed much more objectively than the social skills expertise of a professional practitioner. There have been many attempts to make assessment more objective, eg the use of multiple choice questions and the preparation of assessment criteria, but the extent to which the subjectivity has been removed is debatable.
