Dictionary of Biological Psychology
The attribution of human characteristics to animals.
When animals behave in an apparently human way, people have a tendency to describe their actions in terms which imply an understanding of the thoughts, intentions and emotions behind them. Although occasionally useful, this can be very misleading without expert knowledge of a species. Anthropomorphic tendencies probably result from our innate ability to recognize patterns of behaviour in those around us for appropriate social interaction.
