A Popular Dictionary of Judaism

ANTHROPOMORPHISM

The attribution of human characteristics to *God. God is frequently described anthropomorphically in the *Bible and *Talmud (e.g.‘And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day’.

(see *Genesis 3:8).) Nonetheless it was always understood that God was not another human being and that therefore this language must be understood metaphorically. (See *Numbers 23:19). (See *GOD).
