International Dictionary of Adult and Continuing Education

animation

Short for ‘animation socio-culturelle’. The stimulation of people to awareness of their own needs as a group, so that they define the nature of the needs, determine the means to satisfy these needs and act to do so.

Thus it is neither organization nor teaching, but initiation, catalysis and counselling. This definition constitutes rather a goal to be arrived at than a description of current practice. The term is currently used of functions that have a large element of direction, organization and instruction. It is a form of community education in France.
