ANGEL

Divine messenger. Angels appear in various Biblical stories (e.g.

at *Abraham’s *sacrifice of Isaac, to *Jacob in a dream and to *Balaam’s donkey). They are mentioned in the *prophetic books, in the *Apocrypha, the *Midrash, the *Talmud and in the traditional liturgy. They were also included in the *kabbalistic world view. Many authorities today however regard them as symbolic figures who have no literal existence.
