n. That characteristic of a sound wave most directly related to the intensity of the associated sound and hence, in a complex manner, to the perceived loudness. Amplitude may be expressed in terms of the displacement of the vibrating medium from its rest position or, for a sound wave in air, in terms of the pressure of the air.
