A Popular Dictionary of Judaism
Biblical book of *prophecy dating from the 8th Century BCE. The prophet himself was a herdsman from Tekoa. He condemned the nations of the earth as well as the people of *Israel and *Judah for their wickedness.
In particular he was appalled by social injustice, by those who ‘sell the righteous for silver and the needy for a pair of shoes’. (Ch. 2:6) Although he predicted coming disaster because the nation was more interested in religious observance than in justice and righteousness, he looked forward to future comfort and reconciliation. (See *PROPHECY).
