AKIVA

(c. 50–135 CE) *Sage and martyr.

Akiva was the most prominent *rabbi of his day and was the teacher of many famous scholars, who, according to R. *Johanan all taught to the view of Akiva. He supported Simeon bar Kokhba in his *messianic revolt against the Romans and was ultimately flayed alive by the occupying army. Traditionally he is believed to have systematized the *Midrash.
