A Popular Dictionary of Judaism

AKEDA

(Hebrew. ‘Binding’). The attempted *sacrifice by the *patriarch *Abraham of his son *Isaac (see *Genesis 22).

The story should probably be understood in the context of the ancient practice of child *sacrifice although in the Jewish tradition it is regarded as a supreme example of obedience to *God. The *Jerusalem *Temple was built over the supposed site of the Akeda. The incident has been the inspiration for moralists, philosophers, preachers and artists through the ages. (See *ABRAHAM).
