Dictionary of Environmental Health

agar plate

A piece of equipment used in microbiological examination. AGAR is mixed with a bacterial growth medium (often a meat broth base) and spread on a petri dish or microscope slide (the ‘plate’).

The prepared substance being examined is spread on the plate that is then incubated, dried and stained to reveal the resultant microbial growth. From this the bacterial contamination of the specimen is calculated based on the amount of bacterial growth.
