Air becomes cooler with increasing distance from the earth’s surface. A normal adiabatic lapse rate is 1°C per 100 meters.
A rate greater than this is a superadiabatic lapse rate and is associated with good mixing. A rate less than the normal is a weak adiabatic lapse rate and is associated with light winds. A temperature inversion occurs when temperature increases with height. This is a stable condition, see Atmospheric inversion
