Universal in living tissues, existing in a dynamic equilibrium with the diphosphate ADP and the monophosphate AMP.

Coenzyme involved in the transfer of phosphate bond energy, for example in the contraction of skeletal muscle, where ATP is hydrolysed to the diphosphate, ADP. It is used in biochemical research and in industry to inhibit enzymatic browning of raw potatoes, apples and other fruit and vegetables.
