Dictionary of Environmental Health

acrodynia

A disease of infants characterised by restless behaviour, weakness and reddening of the face or extremities. It was caused by chronic mercury poisoning due to the inclusion of mercury in teething preparations. It virtually disappeared following withdrawal of these preparations in the 1950s. The condition was also known as Pink’s disease.
