ACID RAIN (ACID SNOW)

Precipitation with pH less than 5.6. Pure water, in equilibrium with carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, has a pH of about 5.6.

This value is taken as zero for acid rain study. When an acid particle in the atmosphere is scrubbed out, the pH of the precipitation will fall. The primary sources of the acid particles are combustion products of sulfur bearing fuels.
