Father of the Jewish people. The Book of *Genesis describes how Abraham was promised that he would be the *patriarch of a great nation and his descendants would be as numerous as the stars of the heaven and the sand on the sea-shore.
As a result of the *covenant with *God, the practice of *circumcision was introduced. Abraham had two sons, Ishmael who became the ancestor of the Arabs and *Isaac, from whom the *Jews are descended (See Genesis 12–22). In the *aggadah, Abraham is perceived as an ideal figure. He is the first *proselyte to *Judaism, a man who perfectly kept the *Oral Law even before it was given and a *prophet of God who received every *blessing.
