ABLUTION

Ritual washing. Ablution is practised to restore a state of ritual *purity. It can involve total immersion either in the sea or in a ritual bath and this is undergone by *proselytes to *Judaism and by married *women seven days after their menstrual periods.

The *priests of the *Temple in *Jerusalem also used to immerse themselves before taking part in the ritual. Today hands are ritually washed on various occasions, particularly before and after meals.
