AARON

(C. 13th Century BCE) Brother of *Moses.

After contributing to the liberation of the *Israelites from Egypt, he became *priest of the *sanctuary. All Israelite priests were said to be descended from him and he was remembered as a lover of peace among the people. Rabbi *Hillel advised his disciples to be followers of Aaron, ‘loving and pursuing peace, loving your neighbours and drawing them to *Torah’. (See *Exodus 1–10, 28–29, 32, *AARONIDES).
