That evening, Bond smokes his last cigarette and amuses himself with thoughts of Kissy and what she would be doing that day, what she was eating and her activities.

At nine p.m., he sneaks out of the hut and creeps carefully across the yard, making sure that he avoids the volcanic fumaroles and all the poisonous affects in the area.
