Summary

The chapter titled “The suitor” (187) is told in present tense from the perspective of Yo's hippie boyfriend, Dexter Hays. Yo is going to the Dominican Republic to visit her family and to support her uncle who is running for president. Dexter wants to come with her, but she says she would feel awkward introducing him to her relatives. Dexter decides to meet her in the D.R. anyway and flies down to surprise her. When he arrives at the de la Torres' compound where she is staying, she insists he pretend to be a journalist investigating Dominican politics. He meets her aunts and uncles, including the presidential hopeful, and her cousin Lucinda.
