Summary

Section three begins with Part Four, which provides information about the Lodz ghetto in 1943. Rumors have spread about the “extermination camps” (93) and ghetto has 96 factories, causing the residents to “convince themselves that their work really was essential” (94). Jews begin fighting back in Warsaw.

From winter 1942 to the spring of 1944, Syvia learns about the Warsaw ghetto and uprisings by Jews. Families are now allotted one child per family because the Nazis could not keep track of babies being born in the ghetto. Syvia turns nine.

Part Five gives information about Lodz being the last remaining ghetto and that the others were destroyed. Lodz is ordered to be emptied. Most people are taken away by train and 1200 Jews remain to clean the ghetto. The Allies make advances on D-day.
