Mompellion is digging six graves, including one for the sexton. Anna often visits the sick with Mompellion. One man they visit is Jakob Merrill, who confesses being a poor husband and worries for his young daughter and son. Mompellion assures Jakob that God loves him and Jakob took in Brand when Brand was homeless and, if he makes the young man part of his family, Brand can farm the land and look after the children.
