This lengthy scene takes place in Joseph and Joanne's living room. It's not immediately clear what time frame the action is in, the past or the present, but as Joanne comes in and asks why Joseph is sitting in the dark with a bottle of vodka, conversation reveals that it is the present. Joseph tells how he spent the day at his attorney's and vomited because he was so upset.
