Spike Walker is the author of this book. Spike went to Alaska in the late seventies to find work in the fishing industry. Spike had been lured by reports of high pay for a few months of work. Spike arrived on Kodiak Island with no money and no promise of work. Spike stayed with a crewman from the Royal Quarry, a boat owned and run by a college friend, Mike Jones. Spike spent his first week on Kodiak visiting the local bars and looking for a place on a boat. The following week, Mike Jones invited him on his boat for a run, but without the promise of work.
