Back in the Emerald City, Dorothy and her friends are taken immediately to the palace. The soldier carries a message to the Wizard that the Witch of the West is dead and the victors have come back to claim their promises. To the travelers' surprise, the Wizard seems to ignore them.
After waiting three days for the Wizard to call them to the throne room, the Scarecrow loses patience. He sends a message to the Wizard that if refuses to see them they will summon the Winged Monkeys. The Wizard is very afraid because the Witch of the West had used the Monkeys to drive the Wizard out of her land long ago. He agrees to see Dorothy and her friends the next morning.
