Chapter 8 Summary

It is time for Dorothy and her friends to cross the river. They board the raft the Tin Woodman has built and at first, the crossing goes smoothly. As they near the center of the river, the current is too strong and fast for them and carries them far down stream.

The Scarecrow attempts to steer the raft with a wooden pole. The pole becomes stuck in the mud in the middle of the river and the Scarecrow is left clinging to it. As the raft with his friends on it floats away, he concludes he is no worse off than he was before he met Dorothy. When she found him, he was stuck on a pole in a cornfield. Now he is stuck on a pole in the middle of the river.
