Chapter 1 Summary

Gray and dreary, Frank Baum opens his classic tale, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" with a description of young Dorothy Gale and her farm home on the Kansas prairie. Everything about Dorothy's surroundings is colorless. The walls of the one-room house she shares with her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em have been weathered to a dull gray. The country around the small house is vast and empty. Even Aunt Em's eyes and Uncle Henry's beard are gray. The only sign of life is this chapter comes from Toto, Dorothy's small dog who makes her laugh.

The action in the first chapter comes when the dull, gray dust is stirred by an approaching storm. As the cyclone bears down on the small farmhouse, Aunt Em retreats to the storm cellar. Dorothy tries to rescue Toto.....
