Roland and his companions, his ka-tet, are on a quest to find The Dark Tower, a mystical building that is thought to be the center of all worlds. Roland and his ka-tet have been through several battles, all personal, emotional, and physical, and their goal seems no closer in sight. All are frustrated and losing sight of what it is they have been fighting so hard to find.

In Prologue, Roont, a farmer in a small community called Calla Bryn Sturgis, learns that the time has come again for the Wolves to come. This community has a large number of twin births, and once a generation one twin from each set between the ages of five or six to fifteen are taken. The children are almost always sent back, but they come back brain damaged, many unable to walk or talk or even care for themselves....
