Summary

Chapter 11, the first of Part II in the novel, takes place at Fort Phil Kearny. Rawson wakes Kohn to tell him that their horses are being requisitioned as part of a patrol, so Kohn goes to see the quartermaster, Captain Brown. After reading General Cooke’s orders Captain Brown agrees to leave their mounts alone, but takes the pack mules with him. He complains that he does not have enough resources to run his campaign against the Indians, and tells Kohn to relay to General Cooke the state of affairs at the Fort.

Chapter 12 is another of Michael’s journal entries. In it, he describes his and Tom’s departure from Columbus by train to Leavenworth, Kansas. Along the way Michael, his brother, and an Ohio boy stayed drunk most of the time by buying bottles at stops they made along the way...
