Summary

Tajirika asks his wife where he can find another sorcerer. Vinjinia believes that Nyawira has been burnt alive and killed by the government. One day, while Vinjinia is at church, Maritho and Marika bring her a message from a “dove” (618), which Vinjinia realizes must be Nyawira. In a coded message, Maritha tells Vinjinia that Dove asks Vinjinia to bring her news of a person they both know, presumably Kamiti. While Vinjinia is annoyed at this disruption, she remembers that she once promised to do anything for Nyawira in exchange for stopping her husband from beating her. Vinjinia goes to see Maritha and Mariko. The Ruler publishes a booklet about his new philosophy of modernity, titled “Magnus Africanus: Prolegomenon to Future Happiness, by the Ruler” (621).
