Act 5, Scene 1 Summary

Leontes, Cleomenes, Dion, Paulina and servants enter. Cleomenes is trying to convince the king that he has felt enough guilt and done more than enough good to make up for his earlier transgressions. Leontes explains that he cannot forget how virtuous his late wife was and how he had killed her. Cleomenes and Dion would like to see Leontes marry again and bring a new queen to the kingdom. Paulina disagrees, saying that there is no other woman worthy of taking Hermione's place. Additionally, Apollo, through the oracle, said that Leontes should have no heir. Leontes agrees promising that he will never remarry, unless Paulina chooses his bride.
