Act 1, Scene 3, Part 1 Summary

This scene is set in the same location as Scene 1, under the bridge. Miriamne sits alone, as a Tramp comes and digs himself into a pile of rags to sleep. Two Girls pass by, chattering about how one has been proposed to by a man with whom she had a fight but later reconciled. They comment with disgust on the Tramp, and go out.

Gaunt appears, and asks the Tramp for directions. He believes the Tramp recognizes him and says he's not who the Tramp thinks he is. He then rambles on about evidence that he has with him, relating to a court case he's trying. He suddenly stops, moving out of sight as Esdras appears in the doorway to the apartment. He calls Miriamne to come in, but.....
